“Why I Volunteer”: Frankie D

“Tons of animals everywhere need homes. Cats, dogs, you name it.

Johnston County Animal Protection League, or JCAPL, is an organization that helps homeless animals find homes. They mainly help dogs and cats find homes. You may not have heard of them before, but if you’ve seen the adorable kittens in the cages or unbelievably cute puppies sitting outside at Petsmart, then you’ve seen their work. That’s them cleaning out litter boxes and walking dogs pretty much every Saturday.

They do a lot for the animals and host many activities to raise money for them, one of their most recent being the “Spay-ghetti” dinner at the Senior Center. When I found out how hard they work and how many animals there are that need homes and people to love them, I really wanted to help. I have a cat and dog of my own from rescue shelters and my cat is actually from JCAPL. My mom and I researched it, and I ended up submitting a volunteer application to JCAPL.

I’ve been volunteering there for a few weeks now and I have really been enjoying it. Not only am I helping homeless cats have clean bedding, litter boxes, and fresh food and water, but I also help make sure they get human interaction and are played with.

When I go to Petsmart to volunteer on Saturdays, I usually, along with some other teenagers start by cleaning the cages. We clean the litter boxes, the actual cage, make sure there is clean bedding, and give them fresh food and water. We do that for all the cages. Depending on how many cages are occupied, how dirty they are, and how many people are helping, it usually takes somewhere around one hour. After the cages are clean, for the next hour or so, you just play with all those adorable kitties! How hard is that? It is extremely fun!

Not only are you having a great time, but you are also helping the animals! You can even do it with your friends and make some new ones while you’re there. Not only is it a good social opportunity, but it’s a good way to get in some community service hours.

Volunteering for JCAPL is just a positive experience for everyone, for the animals and the volunteers. You should join me and the rest of the volunteers and submit your application today. The animals will be grateful and you definitely won’t regret it either.”

Wink needs a FOSTER ASAP!!

I am the last of the 10 river puppies that JCAPL took in last year.  All of my siblings have found their forever homes.  I am the only one who doen’t have a home.
When JCAPL took me in, I had an injured eye that required lots of special attention at the vet’s office.  Once the infection cleared up, I started losing some of my hair, and the doctors discovered I had ring worm, too.  Once I had been all cleared to look for my new home,  they found out that I was cryptorchid and had to wait a long time to get neutered.
FINALLY, I am ready for a new home!  But, I guess because of all that I went through, I am still labeled as a special needs dog.  I am food aggessive now but Shane Gentry of Sally Said So Professional Dog Training told JCAPL that I could be rehabilitated into a really great dog.   ”I worked with Wink one-on-one and have absolute confidence that his food aggressive issues can be solved with a little work. He just needs someone to love him enough to get through some training to put his mind at ease.”
I am only 6-7 months old so I just KNOW I can be someones perfect pooch, if given the chance.  If you feel up for the challenge, and can foster me and help me break my bad habits, please let JCAPL know.
Thank you for reading my story.~~~Wink

14 Year-Olds Choose JCAPL for B-Day

Birthday donation

Becky H (JCAPL President) with Olivia and Vanessa, who chose to gather donations for JCAPL as their 14th B-day presents!

Olivia and Vanessa recently celebrated their 14th birthdays, and both chose donations for the JCAPL instead of gifts!  Their spectacular generosity earned a nice stash of items for the Spayghetti fundraiser, kitty litter, cat food, and cat toys.  We can not tell you how much our foster kitties (and doggies) appreciate these items.

We are in desperate need of FOSTERS!!!

animalshelter
We have, sadly, had to refuse to take in several animals in need over the past few weeks becuase we just do not have any foster homes for them.  They have been taken to various shelters around the area, or o…ther 2nd-choice arrangements have been made.
Fostering is a scary idea to a lot of people.  But, we try to make it as easy as possible.  Learn more about fostering at http://www.jcapl.org/blog/volunteer/foster-program/ and ask your questions here.  There is no such thing as a stupid question, and if having an open discussion brings more foster homes to JCAPL, let’s go for it!
There are so many animals in need of our help!! And we can only support the ones we have foster homes for.
