Operation Doghouse

Operation Doghouse is a project sponsored by the Johnston County Animal Protection League. The purpose of Operation Doghouse is to provide dogs in our community with proper shelter. JCAPL recommends that all companion animals live in the house with their families. However, we recognize there are many dogs in our community who are living in yards and to improve their lives we hope to provide as many dogs as possible with safe doghouses.

Each recipient family will be given educational material about the proper care of their pet. We will encourage each family to consider bringing their pet inside.

Recipients will be identified by animal control officers, social workers, and members of JCAPL. We cannot accept referrals from individuals in the community.

The purpose of Operation Doghouse is to provide dogs with proper shelter who have no other option. For example, dogs who are living in circumstances in which they are not provided adequate shelter but for legal reasons animal control cannot take action, dogs living in poverty, and other circumstances for which the best interest of the dog can be met by providing proper shelter.

With plans to expand services to the community and to become a true resource for owners and their pets, JCAPL is developing the "Training Wheels" Program in Johnston County. This program will be modeled after Sue Sternberg's (Rondout Valley Adoption Center, Accord, NY) Training Wheels outreach program. A mobile unit of volunteers visit pet owners in the community and offer toys, treats, collars, leashes, free training lessons, food, bowls, doghouses, advice and education. On occasions, assistance with veterinary and spay/neuter services will be offered. Follow-up visits are made as needed. Read more about Sue Sternberg's Training Wheels Program.

Donations to Operation Doghouse can come in many forms. We will be happy to accept help for this project in any form that helps us provide as many dogs as possible with proper shelter. Individuals and groups may:

  • Donate money to buy dogloos or other acceptable plastic doghouses.
  • Donate used plastic doghouses or dogloos that are in good condition.
  • Build doghouses from plans we will provide.
  • Donate specified building materials.

Recipients will be asked to return any plastic doghouses that may be reused in the event their dogs no longer need the doghouses. JCAPL will be happy to pick up the dog house, sanitize it and provide another dog with safe shelter.

Please contact JCAPL if you are interested in helping with this project. Please do not call for a free doghouse.

Members of JCAPL will be happy to pick up donated doghouses or materials.
