The Spay-Neuter Assistance Program of N. C.
rolls out its new
PREVENT ANOTHER LITTER SUBSIDY PROGRAM (P.A.L.S)

SNAP-NC is our region’s ONLY non-profit mobile spay-neuter group dedicated to addressing North Carolina’s pet overpopulation issues by offering low-cost spay-neuter surgery. Since April 2000, SNAP-NC has performed over 19,000 sterilization surgeries. SNAP-NC is on the road on a full time basis and the SNAP-NC team of licensed surgeons and veterinary technicians work hard to provide the very best services possible.

North Carolina’s euthanasia rate of adoptable animals is twice that of any other state in this country. In Wake County alone, over 20,000 animals are euthanized annually. This number represents more than half of all animals captured or surrendered, held at the county facility for 5 days and disposed of at the county landfill. All at a cost of $112 per animal – totaling a staggering $2.24 million dollars per year. By offering a low cost and accessible spay neuter program, SNAP-NC is reducing the overwhelming amount of animals euthanized in our region, and cutting the incredible cost to taxpayers.

It is now widely accepted that 5% of pet owners are responsible for 95% of the pet overpopulation problem. SNAP-NC serves Johnston County and 14 surrounding counties in the Triangle Region of central North Carolina. In the greater Triangle region, more than 90,000 people live below the poverty level. Many of these individuals are pet owners with litter after litter of free-roaming unaltered animals. These people are financially challenged, without the financial or logistical means to sterilize their pets.

Targeted subsidy programs are a proven method of reducing pet overpopulation. Euthanasia rates in New Hampshire dropped 30% after just one year of their targeted subsidy program. Today, after seven years and a 75% decline, New Hampshire enjoys the lowest euthanasia rate per capita in the country. The SNAP-NC PALS Program will have a direct effect on reducing pet overpopulation in North Carolina! We are proud to have the SNAP-NC P.A.L.S. Program – ‘Prevent Another Litter Subsidy’ Program - in our area!

The PREVENT ANOTHER LITTER SUBSIDY PROGRAM is aimed at identifying and serving the low income public. Low-income clients will submit an application to SNAP-NC. This application (and a lot of other great information) can be found on the SNAP-NC website at www.snap-nc.org. When approved, owners will schedule an appointment to sterilize their pet(s) for modest co-pay ($20 for cats, $35 for dogs). SNAP-NC will still offer the usual full service to these pets – including rabies and distemper vaccinations, and pain control medication!

If you or someone you know has cannot access traditional veterinary services due to financial hardship, please visit the SNAP-NC website at www.snap-nc.org, or call 919-783-SNAP (7627) today!
